Slingshot Simulations Ltd Wins UKAEA Innovation Contract To Address Technical Challenges of Fusion Energy

Slingshot Simulations Ltd has been awarded a contract as part of the UK Atomic Energy Authority’s new ‘Fusion Industry Programme’ through the UK Government ‘Small Business Research Initiative’. Slingshot Simulations is one of the fifteen successful organizations sharing part of the £2.3million total award.

Fusion research aims to copy the process which powers the Sun for a new large-scale source of clean energy here on Earth. When light atomic nuclei fuse together to form heavier ones, a large amount of energy is released. To do this, fuel is heated to extreme temperatures, ten times hotter than the centre of the Sun, forming a plasma in which fusion reactions take place.

Digital twins are a potential solution to overcoming some of the challenges to making nuclear fusion a commercial reality and a long-term energy source that is environmentally responsible.

Pete Mills, Strategic Advisor at Slingshot Simulations explained: “This contract award is confirmation of the impact that the unique combination of data science, visualization, simulation and digital twins provided by Slingshot Simulations can make in accelerating innovation, reducing costs and helping make better decisions faster. We look forward to helping bring commercial nuclear fusion a step closer to practical reality”.

In the UKAEAs announcement, Tim Bestwick, UKAEA’s Chief Technology Officer, said: “Fusion energy holds enormous promise as a low-carbon energy source for the world, but it is technically very challenging. This scheme is helping engage a range of organisations and industrial partners to address these important challenges. We are very pleased to have the opportunity to work alongside these organisations, and hope to include many others as the scheme develops”.

Slingshot Simulations CEO, Dr David McKee added: “As a company, we are committed to developing and applying our cutting-edge solutions to address the biggest challenges we face today, including accelerating the transition to net zero and a more sustainable energy mix. We are grateful to the UKAEA and the Government SBRI program for this award that helps support our mission.”

About Slingshot Simulations, Ltd

Slingshot Simulations was founded in 2019 with a mission to deliver actionable insights from cutting edge data science that positively impact the biggest challenges we face today: Climate change; sustainability; resource management, public health and more. We are a thought leader and industry pioneer, participating in global and national organizations such as the Digital Twin Consortium and Centre for Digital Built Britain. Built on a foundation of more than a decade of research and a century of combined data science expertise we do this using our Software-as-a-Service digital twin platform that enables our customers to rapidly integrate and visualize vast data sets in a spatial context, analyse these data holistically and simulate scenarios to predict outcomes. This enables better, more informed decision making, higher levels of stakeholder engagement and improved outcomes for all. With unique IP, being intuitive and easy to use with high levels of automation combined with a low cost of entry, our “no-code” approach breaks down the barriers to adoption and helps companies accelerate their digital transformation and deliver transformative growth.
