When we invited intern Louis Gilder into the office for a 3-month internship programme, we didn’t expect the pure scale of his findings.
Just about to start his Masters in Computer Science, Louis provided an engaging insight, building road network models and Leeds City Digital Twins. His simulation focused on Leeds Digital Festival, predicting the highest number of events it was possible to attend using public transport.
His experiences were valuable in pathfinding the up-and-coming integrations between SUMO and the Compass: Engine Platform.

Can you give an overview of your project?
During my time at Slingshot, I was tasked with simulating the Leeds Digital Festival and demonstrating how many events an attendee could theoretically go to. To do this, I created a scraping tool to extract the required data from the Leeds Digital Festival website and then used SUMO Simulations to simulate each day of the festival.
Why did you choose to focus on this subject?
The value of an accurate simulation is limitless so to have the opportunity to carry out a project in this area was really interesting. It was also great to have the opportunity to create a web scraper using python. I found this very interesting as it gave more of an insight on how web add-ons are created and how different parts of website’s function.
What were your conclusions?
By completing this project, I have gained good knowledge on SUMO which will be really valuation in my future as I move into studying for my Masters in Computer Science and beyond. Implementing real traffic data, people flow, and public transport enables the user to model any given situation which could have a major impact in planning new builds, new roads and such like.
